Stalwartly Supporting the Sens on the West Coast

About

If you are reading my thoughts on the Sens, it’s possible you’ll want to know who I am. Here’s as much info as you could want:

I am a female person in my late twenties. I was born and raised in Ottawa, but moved to Vancouver, BC in September 2007 to go to the University of British Columbia. I like Vancouver alright but I hate the rain and would gladly take the Ottawa winter over it any day. Some people think that’s odd but at least snow probably won’t cause suicidal depression.

When I was in high school, my dad took me to my first hockey game: a 67’s game at the Civic Centre. I started following them very closely, and eventually also started watching the Sens when Dave Allison was coaching them … good times. I remember the day they made the trade for Wade Redden, and thinking this was going to be the start of good things. I was a total diehard Sens fan for a good while after that, but then they traded my favourite player, Radek Bonk (quite seriously, yes, I loved him), and the lockout happened, and I did not keep track of the team the same way I had in previous years for the bulk of the next two seasons, though I did continue to watch every playoff game. And that is, of course, how I was drawn back in to following hockey in a major way: the Sens’ incredible 2007 playoff run, which my sister and I agree may have been the most fun it ever was to be in Ottawa.

Now I have fully rediscovered my Sens love. I try to listen to every game through the wonders of online radio, and I have a new favourite player: Dany Heatley, who is, I have discovered, much more than just a good shot. Other favourites include Mike Fisher, Jason Spezza, Chris Phillips, and Anton Volchenkov. I also like Brian Campbell of the Buffalo Sabres a lot. He was my favourite 67’s player when I was going to all their games and I’m happy to see him doing so well in the NHL. Other favourite non-Sens players include The Amazing Rick Nash, Vincent Lecavalier, and Ryan Kesler.

I had no intention of starting to follow the Canucks when I moved to Vancouver, but my cable package includes Sportsnet Pacific so they’ve become sort of unavoidable. They’re not the Sens, but they’re pretty good nonetheless. Watching their games is also interesting because I get to see some Western Conference teams that I otherwise would not know anything about.

Other than hockey, my interests include lots of TV, movies, books, and comics. I am a huge fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Joss Whedon’s other work. I also love Harry Potter and Spider-Man (comics and movies). My favourite current TV shows are House, Lost, The Office, Battlestar Galactica, Dexter, and Scrubs; my favourite non-current shows other than the Joss shows are The X-Files, Farscape, Six Feet Under, and Arrested Development; my favourite musicians are U2, Radiohead, Tori Amos, The White Stripes, and The Verve; and my favourite writers are Neil Gaiman, Jane Austen, Mordecai Richler, and of course J.K. Rowling.

That’s about all there is to say about me!

I started this blog because I don’t know that many people outside my immediate family who like hockey, and due to the extreme nature of my Sens obsession I needed somewhere I could talk about them as much as I wanted. Originally, the blog was hosted at SensNation, but I moved it over here to my own domain in June 2008.

The blog is called “Sens at Land’s End” because I live right on the western-most side of Vancouver. There are no other buildings between my building and the water, so I consider it Land’s End.
